Location: working from home initially, then based in central Bristol when coronavirus rules allow the office to reopen. We will consider remotely based candidates who are willing to work 1-2 days per week in Bristol and the rest of the week from home.

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 5pm. We are happy to discuss flexible working

Salary: Up to £35,000 + bonus + benefits

What the job involves:

In this role you will work closely with the Senior Media and PR Manager and the Director of Communications in the day-to-day delivery of media relations and broader external communications, with particular responsibility for managing the day-to-day activities of the press office, dealing with both reactive and proactive issues, crisis communications, and press releases. You`ll also look after the corporate website and some of our operational social media channels. You will be our main day-to-day point of contact for all press and media enquiries, and will develop strong working relationships with a broad range of national and regional media outlets.

To give you an idea of what to expect, you`ll be:

  • Managing the day-to-day running of the press office, dealing with all enquiries from national and regional media outlets, providing timely, professional and on-brand responses
  • Developing and nurturing strong working relationships with journalists from a broad range of publications, websites and other media channels, with a particular focus on contacts in the Higher Education (HE) and Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) sectors
  • Developing and executing a proactive media campaign plan including the production of press releases, blogs and other content, utilising information and resources from both internal and external sources
  • Keeping detailed records of media coverage and press office enquiries, liaising with press cuttings providers
  • Managing updates to the corporate website, the media centre and corporate social media accounts, ensuring a regular stream of relevant, current and engaging content is posted
  • Developing a detailed understanding of our audiences across all channels, and developing content with a specific focus on the needs of these audiences
  • Developing key contacts within the business to work with and source potential stories from
  • Working closely with other parts of the Communications function to ensure joined up approach
  • Working with external PR Agencies where required to provide additional support and management
  • Developing expertise of website CRM systems to support development of the corporate website
  • Sharing out of hours on-call press office duties
  • Keeping our media lists and photo library up to date
  • Deputising for the Senior Media and PR Manager

What we look for in you:

  • Substantial experience of working in a press or media relations role, with a deep understanding of how to manage press enquiries and how to deal with journalists is vital
  • Experience as a journalist in your earlier career would be highly advantageous, though isn`t essential
  • Previous experience in the HE and/or PBSA sectors would be ideal, though isn`t critical
  • Exposure of working on crisis communications is preferred, though isn`t vital
  • Strong experience of developing proactive strategies for planned press and media communications is key, as is the ability to execute these strategies by writing and producing quality content in the form of press releases, blogs, Q&As etc
  • Experience of managing corporate website and social media channel content is strongly preferred, as is the ability to use a content management system (CMS) to deliver content to the website
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are an absolute must-have
  • The ability to develop and nurture strong and effective relationships with journalists and media outlets is also critical
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and balance a range of conflicting priorities
  • Creative approach to identifying and managing content
  • Willing and able to take responsibility, use initiative and judgement
  • Assertive with good influencing skills
  • Flexible and agile with the ability to prioritise work, time manage and adapt to changing situations
