Unite Students` Projects Team have an opportunity for an experienced Claims Quantity Surveyor to join the team.

Reporting to the Commercial Manager, the Claims QS will provide commercial input into all live and prospective cladding claims relating to facade remedial andreplacement projects undertaken by the Estates Project Team. Duties will include commercial andclaims management, managing the flow of information in support of claims, reporting to and informing the Estates Team andwider business of claims progress , budgetary control, and managing all financial aspects from the identification of potential claims through to their successful conclusion. The role will also involve procurement of contractors and supply chain management, as well as defects management and claims resolution.

What you`ll be doing

  • Being commercially responsible for and carrying out day to day management of a number of potential and live cladding claims, including effective liaison and cooperation with Unite Estates department, retained external consultants and experts, external solicitors and barristers.
  • Contributing to monthly and other internal cladding replacement claim reports, as well as ad hoc reports and strategy / request for funding papers.
  • Attending meetings to update the Estates Team and wider business of progress towards identifying, pursuing and successfully resolving cladding claims.
  • Monitoring consultant and other costs for individual cladding claims against agreed budgets.Tendering legal, expert and other consultant services, negotiating fee agreements and appointments and raising purchase orders.
  • Contributing to the claims framework which best supports the Estates re-cladding strategy, to be updated from time to time.Agreeing the preferred approach to an optimal resolution of each claim.
  • Monitoring progress against programme across all live claims.
  • Liaison with Estates Team and external consultants to ensure the timely collection of materials samples, completion of burn and other tests, and completion of expert reports, to service the programme for cladding claims.
  • Liaise with Estates team, external contractors and consultants engaged in cladding remedial works, to ensure that all necessary evidence in support of legal claims is gathered and distributed to legal teams.
  • Compiling cost benchmarking analysis on all cladding remedial / replacement projects delivered by the Estates team.
  • Supporting the delivery of defect rectification including cladding projects.
  • Role modelling Unite values and helping to deliver business initiatives such as carbon reduction, ESG, diversity and inclusion, and Homes for Success.

What we`re looking for in you

  • Experience in a Quantity Surveying / Commercial management role, from a contractor, client or consultant background
  • Ideally some exposure to, and experience of, construction related legal process and / or construction related claims, ideally related to building defects or negligence.
  • Ideally some exposure to, or experience of, alternative dispute resolution [especially construction adjudication & mediation].
  • RICS or CIOB qualified (or part-qualified)
  • Ideally some demonstrable continued learning in construction / contract law post qualification.
  • Demonstrable strong negotiation, influencing and communication skills, with a willingness to participate and present in meetings at various levels.
  • Strong numeracy and computer literacy.
  • Knowledge of, and ideally some exposure to, the technical aspects surrounding cladding compliance with Building Regulations, fire safety in residential buildings & regulatory developments following the Grenfell Tower fire.
  • Ability to work at pace and prioritise multiple tasks whilst maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • A positive and collegiate attitude, with the ability to adapt swiftly and a willingness to undertake challenging tasks to ensure customer/ stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Self-motivation with the ability to work on own initiative and also within a team.
  • A quick learner who demonstrates a capability and willingness to acquire and apply new skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and influence internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel throughout the UK with a full driving licence.
