Margaret is Housekeeping Supervisor in Glasgow where she looks after 660 students. She is proud of the fact that she has never had a bad word with any of them.
“I really enjoy working with the students. For a lot of them, it’s the first time they’ve been away from home and they often need a friendly face and bit of advice. I try to give them both if I can.
My role can be demanding. On any day, I could be cleaning floors, or reporting faults, or ordering stores for my building as well as three others in the city. I am also in charge of turning the building around in summer before the next batch of students arrive. So good time management skills are very important. So is flexibility. In 2005, for example, we hosted athletes competing in the Special Olympics in some of the Unite Students buildings and I really enjoyed helping with that.
I’ve been here seven years now and am very happy. I am never treated like a cleaner. They care about you at Unite Students and they trust you to do a good job. As for the students, I absolutely love being part of their lives and getting to know them. I’m afraid to say that I think about them even when I’m not at work!”
